Cambodia
History
The Kingdom of Cambodia still suffers from the consequences of the rule of the Maoist Khmer Rouge (1975-79). They wanted to forcefully transform society into an agricultural-based communism: About a third of the population died and the country’s development was set back by decades.
Theravada Buddhism, which displaced Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism from the 14th century onward, was the state religion until 1975 – and then again from the 1980s onward. Today it is legally anchored in the constitution.
